Goa : The SubmergenceTwo other projects were conceived of independently, but nevertheless have much in common, and represent a continuing interest and preoccupation of mine. In Cuba, and in Goa, I was interested in, first of all, avoiding clichés, that is, searching beyond common and commercial interests, and penetrating into history and background. In this case, it simply meant going beyond five-star sanitized beaches and hotels, which is what the tourists call Goa. Both projects delve into colonialism, past grandeur and disgrace but attempt to take a neutral stand. This series was taken in Goa, India, in the year 2002 and reveals various aspects of the gradual decline of the Portuguese overseas empire. The cathedrals, forts, mansions, and establishments of a thriving culture are crumbling and disappearing. The series of more than 50 35x35 cm. prints opens showing the collapsing walls and bell tower of a 1500s church, followed by other angles of the church, disintegrating homes, and decline of faith. Here are six selections from that series. Please click on any image for a more detailed view.
